Matera is 130 miles from Santa Marina and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Matera
was a troglodyte (cave dwellers) city of 20,000 until the 1950’s. Its famous sassi
buildings of tufa stone, half constructed and half bored into the rock, lining the
twin ravines that slice through Matera. Some of the sassi have been renovated and
are now used as restaurants, gift shops and similar.
